Making an Ancient Forest - Kalkalpen National Park
Zurück zum Urwald - Nationalpark Kalkalpen
What if we could turn back the clock and restore Nature to her virgin state? The Kalkalpen National Park - steep limestone mountains in the heart of Austria - has done exactly that. The forest managers stepped down and let nature's own management take over. This opened the door for new life: the variety of trees and herbs has grown, and the forests again attract wild animals which had deserted the commercial woods: lynx, pygmy owls, woodpeckers -and the astonishing ichneumon wasp. The complex networks and interactions of the forest are fascinatingly re-formed. We even see how parched trees can make it rain!
