Bloody Edelweiss - The Myth of the Mountain Infantry

Blutiges Edelweiss - Mythos Gebirgsjäger

They defended their homeland, their mountains and valleys - whether as the Tyrolean Territorial Army in 1809 or as the Kaiserschützen regiment in the South Tyrolean Dolomites in the First World War. The myth of the «valiant defenders of the fatherland» lived on as the Alpenjäger (Alpine Infantry) of the Austrian Army under the First Republic. In the Second World War, many Austrians were part of the mountain infantry that took part in a conquest that led them from their mountain homes to battlefields right across Europe. In this film, the last living members of the mountain infantry tell how they survived the war; private photos and films show the outcome from the perspective of the mountain infantry; Nazi propaganda films document the National Socialist war; films from the Allies show the end of the Wehrmacht and the years in prisoner of war camps.
