Lake Tanganyika - Africa's Inland Ocean

Lake Tanganyika - Africa's Inland Ocean

From its setting in the Rift Valley, the four countries around its shores (Tanzania, Burundi, DR Congo and Zambia) display almost every kind of African landscape: volcanoes, rainforest, savannah and desert. There is a fabulous range of wildlife, including chimpanzees and baboons, eagles and pelicans, water cobras, elephants that swim and hippos trotting on the lake bed. And the whole region region remains almost completely inaccessible from outside. The lake itself -1,000 meters deep and 500 kilometres long - must once have been directly connected to the ocean, judging by the salt-water species found here. The lake's fish give a wonderful lesson in evolution: there are even cichlids whose heads angle to the left or the right, depending on which flank of the host-fish's scales they nibble!
